AI Doesn’t Need to Make Advertising Smarter, It Needs to Make It Simpler

For the past two years, the advertising industry’s AI conversation has centered on one question: how can AI make marketing smarter? Smarter media plans. Smarter targeting. Smarter optimization. Smarter forecasting. Smarter creative.

Those are all worthwhile pursuits, and AI is already beginning to reshape each of them. But they represent only part of AI’s potential. Less attention has been paid to AI’s ability to simplify execution.

Imagine this–AI-powered ad tech platforms could enable agencies and media companies to double the campaigns they run while keeping headcount flat. This is not just about AI-enabled widgets that sit on top of existing workflows. It’s about using AI throughout the process to simplify and streamline.

After spending time talking with agencies and media buyers recently, one theme surfaced repeatedly. The challenge isn’t actually coming up with a good strategy. It’s everything that happens after the strategy is approved. Campaigns move across disconnected platforms. Planning, activation, measurement and reporting often live in separate systems. Teams spend countless hours reconciling data, proving performance and connecting information that should already work together.

The opportunity isn’t simply to make better decisions. It’s to reduce the friction between making a decision, bringing it to market, and understanding the results.

The next generation of AI has the potential to do more than produce better recommendations. It can reduce the operational complexity that slows execution, connects too many manual steps, fragments workflows and makes it harder to demonstrate results. AI can make planning smarter, but it can also make the entire journey from strategy to outcome significantly simpler.

That shift requires a different way of measuring success. Instead of judging AI solely by the sophistication of its recommendations or the intelligence of its models, we should also ask a much more practical question: How much friction does it remove?

Can it eliminate manual handoffs between planning and activation? Can it connect systems that have traditionally operated in silos? Can it simplify measurement and reporting? Can it make proving business outcomes easier for marketers and their clients?

Those questions are just as important as whether AI can build a better media plan. The most valuable AI won’t necessarily be the one that generates the best recommendations. It will be the one that makes it dramatically easier to execute those recommendations, understand the results and free marketers to focus on strategy instead of process.

The question isn’t simply how intelligent AI can become. It’s how much friction it can remove.
